We Are At That Point

What point you may ask? A point where our human biomechanics is at stake, a point where our bodies might be building up future pains waiting to explode, a point of concern for our health safety and wellness.

Not many of us are presently concerned with how our bodies are going to react in response to when and how we treat it, but the results are inevitable if we don’t pay attention to it.
The present pandemic in the world has shifted us to a place where we work from home either full time or part time. This gives you the opportunity to be responsible for your ergonomic health and wellness at home.

Office equipment becomes more of a concern as people use whatever they deem fit for work. From your couch, to the dining table and chairs, to the floor, rug or even the use of the ironing board for a table.
My advice? take precaution! the body has a breaking point when subjected to constant wear and tear due to friction, contact with hard surfaces (wrist), improper back rest ( hard unadjustable chair, sunken couches, hard floors etc) poor lighting, poor computer or laptop positioning and many other errors.

Make Awareness your friend. It should be brought to your physical body and your mind. Notice how it feels after sitting for a period of time. Take note of where hurts or not.

Next, set up your equipment properly. If you are using a laptop, find a balance of height for placement, check that you can elevate to eye level some good meters away from your eyes. This will require a raiser, or a table and a stack of books underneath your laptop.

Ensure your lighting is adequate, now that you spend more time on the laptop, you need a lens to shield your eyes from the constant radiation, glare and colours coming from the system so ensure you take breaks by looking away from your device every 20-30 minutes.

You can learn to pad your chair if it isn’t adjustable or padded. The back needs that comfort and support. Remember, your spine is involved here and you don’t want a situation where you induce pains or pinched nerves as a result of your carelessness ( it could be costly in the future, so take it seriously). Ensure your spine has the natural curve in the lumber region (lower back) and avoid rounding your back while working.

You don’t have to be planted at your computer all day. Take breaks, do stretches, maintain your body’s integrity so it can serve you till old age. A reminder again, you are responsible for your health, so now is that time when you can’t simply blame it on your organization.

Be proactive, Stay Safe and Functional.
